BLS (Basic Life Support) classes are required for healthcare professionals, and for students entering into medical, and dental programs. Students seeking their initial BLS certification often confuse BLS with CPR/AED..The class that you are required to take is officially called BLS Provider offered by The AHA (American Heart Association). If you are Not in the medical field, then you would enroll in a CPR/ AED class
BLS classes include CPR and AED, but the focus is on two, or more rescuers working as a team in medical, dental, and First responder environment’s. The AHA Basic Life Support Certification Covers: CPR for all ages, including individual and team scenarios, use of the bag-valve mask (BVM), and automated external defibrillator (AED). Also covers foreign-body airway obstruction (conscious and unconscious), and special resuscitation situations.
Unfortunately, some online companies are using paid advertising to lure people to obtain BLS certification for a fraction of the price, and not including a hands-on skills session through The AHA.
These scams are not accredited professional organizations, and incorrectly publish information for BLS, and for CPR that is outdated, and often times contain erroneous information. We usually encounter at least one person every month that mistakenly took one of these scam courses online, and their hospital, clinical job, or school would not accept it.
In California Healthcare professionals are required to take a BLS certification class every two years through an American Heart Association Training Center, or Training Site. Revive CPR has been trusted to ensure the highest quality BLS training for the last 14 years in San Francisco.
The Red Cross is a well respected professional organization offering BLS certification, however, their certification is not excepted in most California hospitals, or clinics.
if you find an online BLS course from a company that does not include a live component with an AHA Instructor, then it is a scam. On the other hand, a combination of an online course with an in person BLS class is a completely acceptable way to obtain your AHA BLS certification.
Legitimate AHA training centers offer blended learning, which is not only acceptable It has become the norm to obtain BLS certification. Blended learning consists of an online BLS course offered from the AHA, and an in person BLS skills session with an AHA instructor. This hands-on skills session for BLS will take about an hour, and you will leave with your legitimate AHA BLS certification valid for two years. This hybrid course saves you time, and blended learning Is proven to be a more effective way to learn.

You will greatly benefit from taking your first few BLS certifications in a live class led by an AHA Instructor. VAM (Voice Assisted Manikin) are only effective as testing stations for those that are already proficient with their BLS skill, and are ineffective for first time (Initial) BLS certification.
To avoid frustration and potential failure at a VAM location, ensure you are proficient in your BLS skills by taking several BLS certification courses with an AHA instructor. An AHA instructor can answer your questions during a BLS class, unlike at a VAM site, where an instructor will not be available.
If you live outside The San Francisco Bay Area ensure that you are getting the most accurate and current BLS information from an accredited AHA training site.
Important note:
The BLS Algorithm outlined below is for healthcare providers only.
This BLS algorithm also applies to first responders : EMTs, and Lifeguard’s.
